1. Why do I want to take private lessons?

The very best way to learn (anything) is private instruction especially when learning something physical!

A Private Dance Lessons is one-on-one learning. You and your partner can learn the a private environment of our Grand Salon while I concentrate solely on your dance wants and needs.
It is always suggested, if you take private lessons you also take group classes as well. This gives you rapid advancement combined with real world experience.

Presently Group Lessons are being held at the Mission Leisure Center. You can contact them at:

  What should I learn?

3. Should I learn one or more dances?

There are advantages to both paths but predominantly your Lessons should focus on the main dances, namely: Foxtrot, Waltz, East Coast Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha and some Tango.

    Why?

Learning multiple dances helps you be a better dancer in many ways:

  • You have more opportunities to dance at social events when you can dance the right dance for each song,

  • The overall theories that threads through each dance connects all dances so it will be important to learn all types of dance. You will not only understand certain moves in each type of dance but understand how to move like a dancer.

  • One dance will help you learn faster in another dance.

  • Many times after learning one dance, you will find similar moves within another dance, making it easier to learn new moves. Many times students find by starting another dance and practicing for a while they ‘magically get’ moves that stumped them in previous dances.

4. How many lessons do I need?

There are a number of factors that govern the duration of a student's learning such as:

  • physical ability

  • learning curve

  • dance goals

just to mention a few. Some people take only the basics while other want to achieve standards therefore some people dance only for a few months while others may take lessons for years.

5. What is the frequency of lessons?

It is important to take at least one (or even two) lessons per week. This will allow you to rapidly build upon what you have already learned the previous week.

7. I’m afraid of looking ridiculous…

Remember, everyone was a beginner and felt the same way. Keep in mind that the lessons are designed to start at the beginning for beginners and work at your learning level to accomplish your dance goals and build your confidence. From your first Lesson you will feel more confident about dance!

2. What are group classes?

Lessons with multiple people and one or a set of instructors is the definition of Group Lessons. But they are more than this. They are a perfect way to learn what to do with your FEET as almost ALL Group Lessons concentrate on Step Patterns and not on technique or styling.

However, as a main way to learn dancing you need Private Lessons.
Most Group Classes give you the opportunity to dance with multiple partners. As your personal ‘style’ emerges, you’ll learn that not everyone dances the same way and it’s important to understand the range of heights and how that affects a couple’s dance.

6. Do I need a partner?

You need no partner for any Group, Party or Workshop. I encourage all students to dance with a variety of partners. Everyone rotates so you can experience dancing with many different people.
However, as I no longer have a professional female partner I am now only able to teach couples and single ladies in Private Lessons.
