The Medal System

Why on Earth would I want to earn Medals in Dancing? I'm not an athlete!

Good question! When we think of a Medal Award (Bronze, Silver or Gold) we think of SPORTS EVENTS not dancing. We are accustomed to seeing Medals awarded to our Olympic Champions for Swimming, Marathons and Gymnastics but when it comes to "DANCING" it is JUST a Social event. Isn't it?

For most Dancers the WORLD will never know we won anything! Unlike Olympic Champions who are promoted World wide, mostly by commercial sponsors, Dancers function mainly in the World of Dance and away from the eyes of the general public.

So, then why bother achieving a Medal Standard?

Medal Standards do several things. First it is a self achievement and a measure of your own ability to yourself. But that's not all! The Medal Award system positions you amongst other dancers as a signature of accomplishment in the Dance Community.

Also, the Medal System opens doors to high skills in dancing. It sets you apart from other dancers as you grow in ability. It gives Beginner Dancers a BAR to work toward. The Medal System adds a significant commonality among dancers and a sense of uniqueness!

Bronze Level Social Ballroom Dance

Bronze is your first fully recognized Ballroom and Social Dance award and level. This standard is separated into program increments which allow you to achieve each part at you own rate of learning. However, there is some expectation for you to accomplish each Program in an allotted time frame.

The Bronze Standard is divided into four Levels:

Bronze I

Intermediate Bronze II

Bronze III

Full Bronze Medal IV

By maintaining a lesson schedule of, at least, one Private Lesson per week it should realistically take about nine months to achieve each Level.

Gold!

Gold Standard Dancing is considered to be mainly a competition standard. You and your dance partner have taken your HOBBY to the ultimate levels and you are now a member of a very small but unique group of dancers.

This is a STAND ALONE Dance Standard so don't be surprised if you are alone on the dance floor as EVERYONE will want to watch you!

Silver Level Social Ballroom Dance

By the time a person/couple have achieved a Bronze Medal Dance Standard they have invested about two and a half to three years into their dancing. For most this is enough as they are now a comfortable Social Dancer who can function on any dance floor to a wide variety of Social Dance Music.

For others this is just the beginning.

The Silver Medal Standard is a HOBBY standard of dancing. It is not the NEXT STEP after Bronze but an all new and very exciting stand alone style of dance.

Beware the "Community Hall Medal Standard!"

A true Medal Standard takes a great deal of time and an enormous effort on the part of the student and the teacher. Countless hours have gone into the teacher to hone his/her skill to understand the art and then acquire the abilities to teach dancing.

It is really important to ask questions of a dance teachers background and dance education as the Dance industry is NOT a regulated industry as with other trades!

Terms such as Intermediate Level, Advanced Level or even Bronze, Silver and Gold Dancers are often misrepresented or used extremely liberally! Some unskilled instructors will use such terms for their students with little more than a few weeks of dance training.

Ask and ask again the questions of . . . How do I chose a dance teacher?
